James Stevens Curl (English Victorian Churches, and Classical Architecture)
Professor Emeritus James Stevens Curl is the author of
numerous scholarly books, including Making Dystopia: The
Strange Rise and Survival of Architectural Barbarism (Oxford University Press, 2018, 2019). In 2017 he was awarded
the President’s Medal of the British Academy for ‘outstanding
service to the cause of the humanities’ in recognition of his
‘contribution to the wider study of the History of Architecture
in Britain and Ireland’. He is a Member of the Royal Irish
Academy, and a Fellow of the Societies of Antiquaries of London
and of Scotland. In 2019 he was presented with an Arthur Ross
Award for Excellence in the Classical Tradition (History and
Writing) by the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (USA)
